# Watch session recordings

Session recordings are on for every website: choose how many visits to record and what to hide, find the ones worth watching by tag or group, and watch them played back.

A session recording plays a visit back: the pages someone saw, where they moved the mouse, what they clicked and how far they scrolled. Use it to see what a page's numbers can't tell you, like why people leave the checkout or miss a button. Recordings are **on** for every website from the start, and what people type is always hidden.

## Set them up

**1. Nothing to switch on**

**Session recordings** are on for every website, and there's nothing to add to the snippet: the script loads the recorder by itself. To stop recording a website, switch them off in its Settings → Recordings.

**2. Choose how many visits to record**

**Visits recorded** is every visit, or 50, 25, 10, 5 or 1% of them. Each visit is picked once, so it's recorded from its first page to its last, or not at all.

**3. Choose what to hide**

**Hide text**: **Typed text** (the default) or **All text**, for pages that can show personal details. See below for elements and pages to leave out.

Recordings start with the next visits. Open **Recordings** in the website's sidebar to watch them.

## What's hidden, and what's never recorded

- Everything typed into a form, passwords included, is always replaced with asterisks in the browser, before anything is sent.
- With **All text**, every piece of text on the page is hidden too.
- Add `supr-mask` to an element to hide its text, or `supr-block` to leave it out entirely (`data-supr-mask` and `data-supr-block` work too).
- **Never captured**: up to 20 CSS selectors, like `.account-details`, left out of recordings and heatmap snapshots.
- **Pages never recorded**: up to 50 paths, with `*` as a wildcard, like `/account/*`. Nothing is recorded or collected for heatmaps there.
- Canvases, embedded frames from other websites and scripts are never recorded, and images aren't copied: they load from your website when you watch.

Nothing is recorded for bots, for visits your website [excludes](https://supranalytics.app/docs/exclude-visits.md) (your own, IPs, paths, hostnames, countries), in attack mode, or while the plan has lapsed or has reached its monthly event limit. Browsers too old to compress what they send aren't recorded.

> Let your visitors know in your privacy policy that visits may be recorded.

## Watch a recording

The **Recordings** page lists the period's recordings, newest first: the visitor (their face, and their name or email if you [identify](https://supranalytics.app/docs/user-identification.md) them, with their country, device and browser), when, the page they started on (hover it for every page they saw), its tags, the length and the number of clicks. Narrow it to recordings that visited a page, a minimum length (10 seconds to 5 minutes), a tag or a device. A visitor's [profile](https://supranalytics.app/docs/visitor-journeys.md) has a **Recordings** button for theirs.

To see patterns, **group** the list: by entry page, last page, visitor, new vs returning, country, device, browser, operating system, language or window width; by referrer, source, channel or UTM tag; by day of the week, time of day, length, pages viewed or clicks; or by tag. Each group shows its recordings, their average length and clicks, how many had rage clicks, dead clicks or errors, and the latest one; click it to list its recordings, in the same columns as the list. Entry and last pages show a thumbnail of the page, drawn from its [heatmap](https://supranalytics.app/docs/heatmaps.md) snapshot (a page icon until it has one).

Click **Play** to watch. The player skips idle time and plays at 1, 2, 4 or 8 times the speed. Beside it are the recording's details: the visitor, when the visit was, their browser, operating system and window size, its pages, length and clicks, where they were and where they came from, and its tags. Under them, the pages, goals, outbound clicks and tagged moments of the visit; click one to jump there. Tagged moments are also marked on the progress bar.

A recording plays from the page as it first looked. If that first part never arrived (the visitor left as it was being sent), the player says the recording can't be played; its details and moments still show.

## Tags

Recordings are tagged by themselves, so you can find the ones worth watching: each tag shows on the recording in the list, and **Any tag** narrows the list to one. Problems are noticed in the visitor's browser while they're recorded:

- **Rage click**: three clicks within 0.7 seconds in about the same place.
- **Dead click**: a click on something that isn't a link, button or form field (and doesn't look clickable), after which nothing on the page changes for a second.
- **Error**: a JavaScript error on the page, up to 10 a page. Only the message (its first 200 characters) and the script's file name are kept, never the stack.
- **Slow page**: the page took more than 3 seconds to load.
- **Idle**: no mouse, key, scroll or touch for 90 seconds or more while the page was in view.
- **Form abandoned**: something was typed into a form, and the visitor left without sending it. What they typed is never read. Search boxes don't count.

And what the visit led to: **Goal** (the [goals](https://supranalytics.app/docs/custom-goals.md) it completed, by name) and **Paid** (a payment credited to the visit). Goals are your own tags: mark anything as a goal and its recordings are tagged with it. Problem tags are on recordings made since tagging started; goals and payments show on older recordings too.

Add your own too: in a recording's details, **Add tag** lists the tags your team already uses to pick from, or creates a new one (up to 20 a recording, 40 characters each); click a tag to give it one of eight colours (the same on every recording), and × removes it. Your tags show on the recording in the list, and **Any tag** and grouping by tag include them. Viewers can see tags but not change them.

## How many are recorded

Every plan records unlimited visits: there's no monthly limit, and recordings don't count as events in your [usage](https://supranalytics.app/docs/usage-limits.md). How many were recorded this cycle is on Usage & Billing. To record fewer, lower the share of visits recorded in Settings → Recordings.

## How long they're kept

- Recordings are kept for **60 days** on every plan, then removed automatically.
- One recording is up to 2 hours long.
- Editors can delete a recording sooner: **Delete recording**, the last line of its details. The visit stays in your analytics.
- Resetting or deleting the website deletes its recordings (see [Delete your account or data](https://supranalytics.app/docs/delete-account.md)).

## Who can see them

Everyone on the website's team can watch recordings, viewers included; only editors can tag or delete them or change the settings. They're never on a [public dashboard](https://supranalytics.app/docs/public-dashboards.md), and not in the All websites view.

> Using a Content Security Policy? The recorder loads from SuprAnalytics's address even with a proxy: see [CSP errors](https://supranalytics.app/docs/csp.md).
