Subdomains and extra domains

One website, however many domains it spans.

Subdomains count with your main domain automatically. Other domains can report to the same website, and a visitor who follows a link from one to another stays one visitor.

Subdomains.

Hits from any subdomain of your website's domain are accepted: www., blog. and app.yourdomain.com all count for yourdomain.com. Install the same snippet on each.

  • supr-domain set to your main domain shares the visitor cookie, so someone going from your website to your app is one visitor; it's in the snippet by default
  • Visits between your own subdomains never count as referrals
  • The Hostname panel splits traffic by subdomain, and you can filter by it
  • A funnel step can be limited to one hostname, like app.yourdomain.com

More on this in Track across subdomains.

Additional domains.

If the same product lives on other domains too, say yourproduct.io and yourproduct.com, add them in Settings → General → Additional domains, with their subdomains.

Accepted
Hits from your domain, your additional domains (up to 20), and their subdomains.
Refused
Hits from any other domain, so nobody can send made-up data to your website from theirs.
Not a referral
A visit arriving from one of your own domains doesn't count as a source.

One visitor across domains.

Cookies can't be shared between domains, so the script carries the visitor on the link. List your domains in supr-allowed-hostnames; the snippet in Settings → General does it once additional domains are set.

  • A clicked link to another listed domain gets _supr_vid, _supr_sid and _supr_ts; the page there takes the visitor and visit over and removes them from the address bar
  • The visit carries on: no new session, no referral, and the click isn't counted as an exit link
  • The ids are only taken from links under 2 minutes old, so a link someone copies and shares later doesn't merge strangers
  • A payment made on the second domain is credited to where the visitor first came from

Set it up.

  1. Add your domains

In Settings → General → Additional domains.

  2. Copy the snippet

From Settings → General: it now has supr-allowed-hostnames with all your domains.

  3. Install it everywhere

The same snippet on every domain and subdomain.

How it works, in detail.

The docs page “Track additional domains” goes through it step by step.

How it works

Limits worth knowing

  • Only clicked links carry the visitor; for a redirect or form post from your server, add the parameters yourself from supr.visitorId() and supr.sessionId()
  • Someone who reaches another domain by typing the address or from a bookmark counts as a separate visitor there
  • In cookieless mode the script doesn't add the visitor to links
  • Up to 20 additional domains per website

Questions, answered.

Do I need a separate website for my app's subdomain?

No. Hits from every subdomain of your website's domain are accepted, and the Hostname panel shows them apart.

How do I keep one visitor between my website and my app?

On subdomains, set supr-domain to your main domain so the visitor cookie is shared; it's in the snippet by default. On different domains, list them in supr-allowed-hostnames.

Can two different domains report to one website?

Yes. Add the others in Settings → General → Additional domains, up to 20, and install the same snippet on each.

What happens to hits from domains I haven't added?

They're refused, so nobody can send data to your website from a domain that isn't yours.

Does a visit from my blog to my app count as a referral?

No. Visits between your own domains and subdomains are never counted as a source.

See it on your own website.
