Heatmaps

See where people click and how far they scroll.

A heatmap draws the clicks, the scroll depth, the confetti (each click coloured by where its visitor came from) and the overlay (each element's clicks) over a picture of the page, and lists every clicked element with its clicks, separately for desktop, tablet and mobile. It has a switch of its own: no session recordings needed.

Four maps and a list for each page.

Clicks
Every click, drawn where it landed on the element clicked. Hover a spot for the element, its clicks and their share of the page's.
Rage clicks
Three quick clicks in the same spot, a sign something didn't respond. A spot's tooltip counts them.
Scroll depth
The page shaded by how many views reached each 5% of its height, with lines where 75%, 50% and 25% of views were left, and the average fold on that device.
Confetti
Every click as a dot coloured by referrer, source, channel, new or returning, country, browser, window width, time of day, UTM and more. Untick a value to hide its dots.
Overlay
A marker on each clicked element. Click it for the element's clicks, their share of the page's, and a breakdown by referrer, country, new vs returning and more.
List
Every clicked element in a table: what it says, its type, its clicks and their share of the page's, still on the page or gone. Downloads as a CSV file.

By device, for any period.

  • Desktop is 1024 pixels wide or more, tablet 768 to 1023, mobile narrower
  • The busiest pages of the period are listed first, and the dashboard's dates apply
  • Download a heatmap as an image: the page with its clicks, scroll depth, confetti or overlay over it

The picture under it.

The page picture is a snapshot taken from a real visit, at most once a day for each page and device. Snapshots follow the same rules as session recordings: typed text is hidden, and supr-mask, supr-block, the selectors never captured and the pages never recorded all apply.

Set it up.

  1. Its own switch

Heatmaps can be switched off in the website's Settings → Recordings without turning off session recordings.

  2. Let visits come in

Clicks and scrolling are collected from the next visits, and a page's snapshot is taken on its next visit from each device.

  3. Open Heatmaps

In the website's sidebar, pick a device, then a page.

How it works, in detail.

The docs page “See where people click and scroll” goes through it step by step.

How it works

Limits worth knowing

  • On for every website until you switch them off
  • Clicks, scroll depth and snapshots are kept for 60 days, then removed automatically
  • A page shows no heatmap picture on a device until it has had a visit from that device
  • Nothing is collected for bots, excluded visits, in attack mode, at the monthly event limit or while the plan has lapsed
  • Not on public dashboards or in the All websites view

Questions, answered.

Do heatmaps count toward my session recordings?

No. Heatmaps aren't recordings, and they don't count as events either.

Do I need session recordings turned on for heatmaps?

No. Heatmaps have their own switch in Settings → Recordings.

What is a rage click?

Three quick clicks in the same spot, a sign that something didn't respond. Hover a spot on the clicks map to see how many it had.

Why does my heatmap say there's no snapshot yet?

The page picture comes from a real visit. One is taken on the page's next visit from that device: desktop, tablet or mobile.

Can I save a heatmap?

Yes. Download it as an image of the page with its clicks or scroll depth over it.

How long is heatmap data kept?

60 days, then clicks, scroll depth and snapshots are removed automatically.
