Tracking parameters
Tag a link, and the visit is credited.
Add `?ref=` to the links you post and every visit from them gets a source and a channel, even from apps that send no referrer. Untagged visits are worked out from the referrer.

Short source tags.
Besides UTM tags, SuprAnalytics reads ref, via and source. A visit's source is the first one present of utm_source, ref, via and source, read on its first page.
?ref=producthuntand?ref=phboth become Product Hunt, and?ref=hnHacker Newsxandtwitterbecome X,fbFacebook andigInstagram, in any case- A known domain, like
?ref=discord.com, gets its usual name and channel - Any other value is shown as written:
?ref=slackand?ref=Slackare two rows, so keep one spelling
Campaign, medium and content tags and their reports are on UTM tracking.
How the channel is worked out.
Every visit gets one of seven channels, from its source and utm_medium, shown in the Channel tab.
- Direct
- No referrer and no source parameter.
- Organic Search
- Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and other search engines, or
utm_medium=organic. - Paid
- A paid
utm_mediumsuch as cpc, ppc or display, or an ad click id likegclid, msclkidorttclid. - Social
- X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, Hacker News and other social sites, or
utm_medium=social. - AI
- ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI assistants.
- Email and Referral
- Email for
utm_medium=emailornewsletter; Referral for any other website, or a source it doesn't recognise.
Links shared in apps.
Links opened from Reddit, X, Slack or Discord on a phone, or from a chat assistant's app, often arrive with no referrer and would count as Direct. A tag fixes that: the parameter wins over the referrer, so ?ref=reddit opened from x.com counts as Reddit.
Visits from your own domain and its subdomains are never a referrer, so moving from your blog to your app doesn't start a new source.
How it works, in detail.
The docs page “Track campaigns with UTM tags and ref links” goes through it step by step.
Limits worth knowing
- Parameters are read on a visit's first page only
- Untagged links pasted into a chat or typed in stay Direct, and nothing recovers the source later
- A tag travels with the link: someone who copies your
?ref=redditlink elsewhere still counts as Reddit - You can only tag links you write; links in an AI assistant's answers count by their referrer or their own tag
Questions, answered.
What's the difference between ref and utm_source?
utm_source wins when both are there. ref is shorter and enough for most links; add UTM tags when you also want a campaign, medium or content.Which channel does an unknown ref get?
utm_medium on the same link sets the channel, such as utm_medium=social.Does a tag override the referrer?
What about ad clicks with no source?
gclid is Google, msclkid Bing.Does a later visit keep the first tag?
