Page alerts

Say hello on the page where it matters.

A page alert tells you when a visitor opens a page you chose, such as pricing, and can send them a message of yours at that moment, once, whether or not you're at the dashboard.

An alert has three parts.

A name
What the pop-up and the conversation call it, such as Pricing.
The page
Part of the address to look for: /pricing matches /pricing and /pricing/teams. Pick from the pages your visitors have opened, or type one.
A message, if you want one
Up to 2,000 characters, with {{ name }}, {{ site }} and {{ path }}. Leave it empty to only be told.

With a message.

  • It goes out from the server the moment the visitor opens a matching page, so nobody needs to be online
  • Once per visitor and alert, however often they come back to the page
  • It's signed with your chat's name, and their chat bubble opens on it, as it does for your replies
  • In the Inbox it's marked as sent by the alert, and the conversation shows it was started by an alert
  • Their answer lands in the Inbox like any other message

Told while you're there.

While the website's dashboard is open, every alert that's on also pops up when a visitor opens a matching page: who it is, the page, their city, country and device, and a button to start or open the conversation. It stays for 30 seconds.

Set it up.

  1. Open Alerts

The bell button above the Inbox.

  2. Add an alert

Click New alert, name it, enter the page and, if you like, the message.

  3. Switch it on or off

Each alert has its own switch, so you can pause one without deleting it.

How it works, in detail.

The docs page “Chat with your website visitors” goes through it step by step.

How it works

Limits worth knowing

  • Up to 50 alerts per website
  • An alert matches every address that contains what you entered; there's no exact-page option in the dashboard
  • The pop-up needs the website's dashboard open in a tab; the message doesn't
  • Nothing is sent while live chat is off or the website is in attack mode, and alert messages aren't emailed to visitors who left

Questions, answered.

What is a page alert?

A rule that watches for visitors opening a page whose address contains what you chose. It tells you in a pop-up and can send them a chat message of yours.

Will a visitor get the message every time they open the page?

No. Each alert sends its message to a visitor once.

Do I have to be online for the message to go out?

No. It's sent by the server as the page view arrives, whether or not anyone has the dashboard open.

Which placeholders can the message use?

{{ name }} (the visitor's name, or "there"), {{ site }} (your chat's name) and {{ path }} (the page they opened).

Is the message written for me?

No. It's exactly what you write; nothing is generated. See live chat for how conversations work after that.

See it on your own website.
